Importance of Dryness Fraction in Steam Separators
The quality of steam passing through steam separators is of immense importance in an application. The quality of the steam is determined by the water content in the steam. 100% pure steam is completely transparent and is difficult to obtain. When steam is produced it can carry water droplets with it and as it passes through pipelines before entering the separator, it will lose some energy, thus forming water droplets. These water droplets lower the quality of the steam. To decide on the quality level of steam, one can take into account the exact quantity of water present in a particular amount of steam. For example, if a batch of steam contains 15% water by mass, the steam is said to have a purity level/ dryness fraction of 85% (100 – 15).
